Regulating and Co-Regulating Yourself and Your Pets into Healthy Relaxation
A SIMPLE CO-REGULATION SELF CARE PRACTICE YOU CAN USE ANY TIME!
Co-regulation is the simple practice of finding a calm, regulated state within ourselves and allowing this to influence those around us in a gentle and harmonious way. We can use co-regulation to help our pets to find a relaxed, regulated state and at the same time calm our own nervous system.
The first step is to stop. Bring awareness into your body. Put your phone on airplane mode, activate the timer for 5 or 10 minutes, then place it face down, out of reach. If you have a pet handy, call them over.
Then simply pat them, but very slowly. Maybe 1/8 the normal hand speed you use. Notice yourself and your pet relax.
Enjoy this! Repeat at least 1-2 times daily, more if you can. Every time you do this, you will co-regulate your pet, and yourself, into deeper and deeper states of healthy relaxation.
