Rising to Challenges: Here’s How!

rising to challenges

Rising to Challenges is essential in today’s world. If you fall, your pets fall too!

Rising to challenges is something I’ve not always been good at. I used to be pretty good at collapsing in the face of challenges, actually. That caused me all sorts of problems until I learned that rising to challenges is a deep, necessary life skill that makes a world of difference to me (and for my pets too – the more I rise, the more they rise).

Challenges are always arising, coming into our lives. They can be small – like getting out of bed when I’d rather sleep in. Keeping on doing resistance exercise 5 mornings a week, even when I might have tweaked my body a bit and be sore. Showing up and doing all the necessary things, even when they are boring. Managing our visiting dog friend (who wants to hump Gem non-stop) without getting too frustrated.

There are always small challenges. A lot of people don’t value and love their small challenges. There can be a tendency to write them off; that they are too small to bother with, not worth rising to, because they are so small that they aren’t so important. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Your smallest challenges are your most important opportunities to practice rising to challenges in your life. This is where you practice, build your tolerance and capacity for healthy discomfort, and grow your muscles for greater challenges. The more you do the small, hard, challenging things, the more you can do the big, hard, challenging things when you need to.

Remember- if you collapse in the face of challenges, your pets will pay a price. You’ll be absent, exhausted, checked out, and not only will your pets feel the lack of your care and presence, but you might also miss signs that something serious is going on that needs attention.

Simple tips to get better at rising to challenges

The easiest way to get started rising to challenges in your life more and more powerfully is to do resistance exercise at least 3 mornings a week (preferably 5). Pushups! These are your best friends in teaching you how to rise to your inevitable challenges.

They are uncomfortable. (All challenges are uncomfortable.)

So you get to do them even when it’s uncomfortable. That builds your capacity.

Then, pay attention to all of the small challenges you meet in your life. Someone in traffic not driving well. Unexpected extra work at your job. Dropping a cup of tea. Your pets doing something dreadful. A bad night’s sleep. A cold or other mild illness.

Keep on asking yourself- how can I best rise to this challenge? Just asking the question opens doors of possibility.

The other thing you need is a strong loving will, and an intention that you will always rise to all of the challenges in your life as best you can.

Rising to challenges gets easier the more you practice it. Then you can help your pets through their challenges so much better, too!
