Embracing This Life: A pathway to healing for your pets, and for you

embracing this life

Embracing this life is essential. How well are you doing this?

Embracing this life is what makes this life worthwhile, whole, and healed. It’s another one of these incredibly important things that are simple, but not always easy. Life brings you all sorts of experiences. The more uncomfortable the experiences are, the harder they tend to be to embrace. The more uncomfortable they are, the more important it is to stay present and embrace them as best you can.

Embracing this life nourishes you, and that means you can then nourish your pets. The more you are present with what is, the more you can be present with your pets, and keep on top of taking the best care possible of them, all the time.

Embrace means to circle, surround, and hold. Embracing this life means that you are containing all that is unfolding in your day, caring for it, and caring for you (and your pets) as you meet what is, again and again.

Embracing this life means you need to face and own your weaknesses. It means that you grow in acceptance, in your capacity to hold space for yourself and for your animals. It also means owning your strengths and making good use of them. It means that you keep on filling up your cup, all the time, even when you don;t want to do what needs to be done.

Embracing this life: some practical tips.

Sounds easy, feels hard? I used to be hideously dissociated and would escape into a range of unhealthy, addictive behaviours. I had all sorts of trouble with relationships because I couldn’t face the necessary, difficult conversations. My life was a mess quite a bit of the time.

Embracing this life started slowly, and I got better and better at it over time.

Here are some things to try:

  • Gratitude: The more you actively practice gratitude, the easier embracing this life becomes.
  • Exercise: Healthy exercise helps you be in your body, and makes you stronger, so then when things are challenging, you can still embrace this life, and not collapse.
  • If you fail, go back and have another go. You’ll do better on some days than others.
  • Get help – work with healers, therapists, etc. The more you ask for help, the quicker you’ll grow into embracing this life more and more.
  • Take it easy on yourself. Any small step to the better makes a difference.
  • Use your pets to motivate you to do what’s needed. Look at them, and know that everything you do to embrace your life more strongly benefits them so much.
  • Be willing to endure healthy discomfort, and increase your tolerance for it (exercise – aerobic and resistance, are great for helping with this!)
  • If you feel stuck, get out into nature and appreciate the beauty of the world.

Embracing this life is a lifetime practice. It takes will, self-love, and determination. It’s powerfully connecting, healing, and empowering. And the more you do it, the more your pets will have of you, which makes them feel more loved and safer!
