Help Your Pets With Dr Ed #33: JOY and WORK

joy and work

JOY and WORK are pure magic when you get them active in your life in healthy way!

Joy and Work are two of the absolute cornerstones of my life.

I actively work at creating and maintaining a strong momentum, expression of, and experience of joy in my life. I treat joy like a muscle, and I train it just like I do my physical body with pushups, weights, chin-ups, etc. Joy can just happen. But not if you want a consistently, abundantly joyful life.

I work at joy. I spend time every day generating the feelings, the experience, the consciousness of Joy in my mind, in my body, and in my life. I keep on filling my joy cup to overflowing. The more I do this, the more functional and naturally motivated I am.

And this feeds into my work. When I am joyful, work is a breeze. I can be efficient, productive, and most of all, consistently enjoy my days as I work. This makes such a massive difference for me in my life.

This doesn’t mean that I avoid or bypass less comfortable feelings like sadness, grief, anger, shame, envy, jealousy and so on. I wake up some mornings feeling grumpy, out of sorts, or full of grief. That’s part of being human. I give myself time and space to honour and connect with those feelings.

Then I turn on my joy generator in a whole range of ways (more about that in a minute) and grow my ‘joy bubble’ until it gets bigger than the bubble of less comfortable (but equally divine and important) emotions/feelings. Then, when I move on into my day, joy is driving the bus of my life, and everything is so much better!

Here’s how I create healthy joy and work becomes a pleasure…

You too can creat a life where joy and work dance hand in hand through the wildflowers!

Generate joy – make this a habit, strengthen your joy muscle. Do it every day, many times a day.

Here are some ways I do this:

  • Smile – no matter how you feel, create at least 10-20 big, shiny, whole-face smiles every day (the corners of your eyes MUST crinkle)
  • Remember in detail with all of your senses, at least 5 times in your life that were incredibly joyful
  • Find 5 things of people to be grateful for, and spend some time sinking into that feeling
  • Go and do fun, creative things – art, music, dance, food, etc
  • Spend time with or call a dear friend or relative
  • Watch some ridiculous comedy (Billy Connelly is my Fave)
  • Get out in nature
  • Watch the clouds and see what shapes/animals they are making
  • PAT YOUR PETS!
  • Express active appreciation to people in your life (yes, this will give you joy too!)
  • PAT YOUR PETS AGAIN!
  • Then go and play with your pets, too!

Joy and work. Creating and maintaining a strong momentum of joy takes work. It takes effort. It takes time. It takes dedication. And it’s worth it.

You’ll see your pets shift as you do this. They will relax, connect more deeply with you, be happier, more active, and healthier. Your joy is contagious, and your pets always deeply feel and appreciate it when you are joyful.

So come on! Make joy and work a beautiful part of your life – for you and your pets…
