Gentle Curiosity will help you in more ways than you can imagine!
I have found that living with a mindset of gentle curiosity has been one of the most powerful things I have ever tried when it comes to supporting healing, vitality, and happy, harmonious life with ongoing healthy growth. Before I dig into why, let’s look at the meanings of the words.
Gentle:Â ‘calm, kind, or soft’ –Â and the deeper, older meaning includes: ‘give birth, beget’.
Curiosity:Â ‘a quality related to inquisitive thinking, such as exploration, investigation, and learning’, ‘the feeling of wanting to know or learn about something’. The deeper, older meaning includes:Â ‘careful attention to detail’, ‘desire to see or learn what is strange or unknown’.
For me, gentleness in my curiosity is a magic key. The calmer, kinder, and softer I am in my ongoing curiosity, the more sustainable and enjoyable these explorations become. I used to go at things like a bull at a gate. And that led to boom bust, crashing, and a lot of stress – as well as a lack of sustainable, enjoyable growth.
Curiosity is a natural human trait. We all have it to some degree, and children have a LOT of it. That’s one reason why kids learn so much, so quickly. The more we can maintain gentle curiosity throughout life, the more we will continue to learn and grow. The more we learn and grow, the better our lives (and the lives of our pets) become.
How can you support gentle curiosity for you and your pets?
It’s simple, but not always easy. Gentle curiosity requires a degree of work, application, ongoing energy, and intention. It doesn’t just happen. You need to increase your awareness, so you can create and maintain your stance of gentle curiosity. You have to put time and energy into seeking and learning new things – and maybe even more importantly, learning new things about all the stuff you already know well.
There are always refinements, incremental improvement, new or better ways to do EVERYTHING – no matter how good you are at them, no matter how long you’ve been doing them. If you always have gentle curiosity about how you might be able to do everything you do just a tiny little bit better (ina relaxed, easy way), you’ll naturally start to see how to do that. And these tiny, easy, incremental changes make a MASSIVE difference over time.
You can apply this to your relationship and life with your pets. For example – when walking, you can be continually working on ‘yeilding to pressure’ games, so that you dog always walks easily on a loose lead. You could get better and better at reading (and getting ahead of) your dog’s ‘arousal curve’ so that you help them get calmer, steadier, and better at self-regulating over time.
You could slowly, gently, learn more about holistic health care, healthy diet, supplements and so on. Every little change you make in this way for your pets increases vitality and longevity. And probably saves vet bills over the long term!
The more you apply gentle curiosity to how present you are, the more present you’ll become, and then your relationship with your pets will blossom and deepen.
Gentle curiosity is a powerful pathway to making your life, and your pet’s lives, a whole lot better over time. And it will take time. But you have the rest of your life, so I encourage you to get started now!
