Gentle Insistence is a core skill for all pet guardians (and a great life skill for all humans)
Gentle insistence is the best way I know to give your pets (and perhaps yourself) all the things they need to be truly happy and well – even when these are things that your pets might not like very much. Necessary training. Medicines. Grooming. nail clips. Being examined by vets. Having to go on a diet to lose weight. Impulse control.
There are lots more things that you need to do with your pets that they might say ‘no’ to, but you have to find a way to get to a healthy yes. Gentle insistence is how I do this, and if you do it right, it actually makes your relationships with your pets stronger and better.
One of the key things about implementing gentle insistence with your pets is that you simply have to be more determined than your pets, in a kind way. A lot of the animals I help as a vet, the animals are way more determined than the hiumans, so they pretty much do what they want.
This can be a real problem when it comes to having to examine pets or work with them to collect blood and other medical interventions. It can also end up being a problem for the humans, because they end up being at the mercy of their little furry tyrants!
Gentle insistence is all about finding a way to help your pets accept what needs to happen, with kindness. Sometimes firmness will be required! But you should never feel like you are bullying or forcing your pets.
Gentle Insistence – a practical guide!
Your first step with gentle insistence is yoru intention, your will. You ahve to decide that this thing is going to happen, no matter how much sad puppy dog eyes get thrown at you, no matter how many doggy tricks your furry family member tries out on you, no matter what!
Your energy and intention needs to be ‘This is going to happen!’
Your pets will feel this. It will make a real difference.
Then you just keep on trying things until you get there.
You are NOT allowed to feel sorry for your pets, by the way. As soon as you do, the wheels will all fall off, and they will be back to getting just what they want, no matter how bad it is for them!
It takes time and practice. And sometimes some coaching! But it is pone of the best things you can do with yoru pets!
Here’s a short video of me discussing this topic.

The Whole Energy Body Balance method needs you to engage with your pet’s pain and tension. They’ll often say, NO THANKS. Which is why we teach you how to gently insist until your pets learn how good it feels, and then are lining up for it! You’ll learn how to heal in a way that is kind, easy, and graceful. And I teach you how to be save, integral, and respect your sovereignty, and the sovereignty of those who you work with…
Our core practice in WEBB, the Somatic Embodiment + Energy Connection process, is designed to get you into the most powerful state of presence and connection possible. This then sets you up to do healing work with pets (or with people) in a way that nourishes and protects you.
I invite you to consider Whole Energy Body Balance™ Bodywork for Pets. Not only will you learn how to find and heal you and your pet’s Silent Pain, Anxiety, and Trauma, but you’ll learn how to listen deeply as you explore therapeutic touch and energy healing with your pets (who will LOVE IT).
