Safety and Preparation are things that everyone should be thinking about, and doing all the time!
The world is a scary place at present. The geopolitical order for freedom and democracy, once led by the USA, is collapsing before our very eyes. The levels of fear and misinformation are off the dial. There is very real potential for escalation and conflict internally in the USA, and globally. Safety and preparation have never been more important!
I’ve had a tough week. There have been times when I have not been ok. Fearful. Off balance. Worried.
So I did what I always do when I am challenged. I dug deep into my self-care practices. Again and again, going back to the well I’ve dug through years and years of 5 mornings every week, training for life, optimizing my energy systems, filling my cup, increasing my resilience, and getting stronger. I amped it up and did more than usual.
I kept working away until I regained my feet, got grounded, got present, and got my mood back online – happy, optimistic, and above all, functional. For me, my ongoing self-care, fitness, and energy optimization practices are the most important things I do to contribute towards my safety and preparation – and that extends out to my animals and my family. If I’m not ok, then nothing in my life is ok.
I have been spending extra time connecting with and loving up my pets, too. they feel when I’m not great, and they need to know that I’m present with them. It really helps.
So – self-care is the first step in all safety and preparation for me. Ongoing, strong self-care that keeps me functional, resident, and capable of acting.
What does safety and preparation look like, practically?
Then I have to settle in and work out what I can do to make my home, my animals, and my family, as safe as I can, no matter what happens. I’d much rather invest some time and resources in being prepared for emergencies and disasters and not need it, than neglect to do so, and end up in a terrible pickle if things do go off the rails.
It’s important to shape your plan for safety and preparation to your circumstances. Where do you live? What do you need? What do your animals need? What resources do you have?
The key things all beings need are shelter, warmth, food, water, transport/mobility, and the capacity to communicate. How long would you have all of these things in a true emergency?
What can you do to build a store of water, food, and essential needs – like medications, for example? For you first, because without you, your animals are lost. And then for them. Staples. Things that store without refrigeration.
What can you do to grow food?
What can you do to build strong local connections? Community is our greatest saviour in times of trouble.
What can you do to stay online? Some kind of solar rechargeable battery pack is a great idea. A battery-powered AM/FM radio is also important to have.
What can you do to stay mobile, and be able to move around? A battery-powered bicycle is one option not dependent on fuel.
Some cash reserves could be a literal lifesaver.
It’s hard to think about. But it’s worth having a good, deep look at your life, and then doing what you can, within the context of your life, to make sure that you have safety and preparation for yourself, your family, and your animals!
Here’s a short video of me discussing this topic.
